Go for green@Berlinale Open House

Go for green is the title of a Berlinale event at Berlinale Open House where various experts will give the audience an insight what kind of measures can be taken to produce films more eco-consciously.  A guest speaker from Germany is Producer Karsten Stöter whose production company Rohfilm Factory produced the German Berlinale Competition film 3 Tage in Quiberon by Emily Atef. The drama received a Green Shooting Card for undertaking sustainable measures during production by the Filmförderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein. The producer will point out which actions were taken to avoid environmentally harmful transportation.

Energy and transport are often generating most of the carbon emissions on set. Therefore the Sardegna Film Commission developed a green protocol that is encouraging productions to take environmentally-friendly actions. The productions receive additional support if they are managing their resources carefully during shooting, as Nevina Satta, CEO of the Sardegna Film Commission will explain. A recent example is the Italian Berlinale Competition film Figlia Mia by Laura Bispuri that did stick to the green protocol which was even cost-saving for the Rome-based production company Vivo Film.

Even the production of animated films can be sustainable.  In France, several companies are using the heat emitted by the computers during rendering of animation and CGI effects in order to heat offices, residential buildings or even a swimming pool. Joanna Gallardo, Coordinator of Ecoprod, will talk about the activities of the French collective that brings together broadcasters, film funds, environmental organizations and technique associations which are pooling their strengths towards an environmentally-friendly film and television production  in France.

A great deal of experience with green production already has Italian Producer Carlo Cresto-Dina. In 2014, his production company Tempesta Film patented the environmental impact reduction protocol Ecomuvi for film and TV  production. In order to manage precious resources and materials more carefully he  is suggesting a zero waste life style. His motto is: “Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rot”.

The English language panel discussion Go for green will be moderated by Birgit Heidsiek, Publisher of Green Film Shooting. The event will take place on February 20 from 4 to 5pm at  Audi Berlinale Lounge, located directly in front of the Berlinale Palast, and offers Open House for all Berlinale vistors.
