It is part of a herd that is migrating hundreds of kilometers through the untouched wilderness of the Arctic Circle. Each day is an adventure just as it was for the crew of <em>Ailo\u2019s Journey<\/em>, French director Guillaume Maidatchevsky\u2019s feature film, which spent months following migrating herds of reindeer across frozen mountains and iced-over seas. Freezing polar nights with temperatures falling below 40 degrees Celsius required cameras specially designed for use in such extreme cold.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/greenfilmshooting.net\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/02\/Lappland.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5470\" src=\"http:\/\/greenfilmshooting.net\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/02\/Lappland-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"484\" height=\"321\" srcset=\"https:\/\/greenfilmshooting.net\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/02\/Lappland-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/greenfilmshooting.net\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/02\/Lappland-630x418.jpg 630w, https:\/\/greenfilmshooting.net\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/02\/Lappland.jpg 667w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 484px) 100vw, 484px\" \/><\/a>While filming in Lapland, the crew respected the environment as requested by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lapland.fi\/film\/for-productions\/production-guide-code-of-conduct\/\">Code of Conduct<\/a> created by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lapland.fi\/film\/about-finnish-lapland\/\">Finnish Lapland Film Commission<\/a>. \u201cSustainable production is an important topic in Lapland, where we not only have unique natural locations but also a unique culture\u201d, says Film Commissioner Anna Niemela\u0308. \u201cOur Code of Conduct is intended as a guideline for best practices for all film, commercial, and television productions working inside Lapland that have a significant impact on a location.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OahSTA1e0-I\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Code includes guidelines for filming in natural settings as well as urban environments, for depictions of community and culture; and it contains recommendations for green and sustainable filming. It is the production company\u2019s responsibility to do no harm to the wilderness. Littering is strictly prohibited. Collection sites for metal, as well as for burnable and food waste can be found in almost every village, with multiple sites in towns and cities. But deep in the wilderness, the productions themselves are responsible for properly disposing waste material.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Su<a href=\"http:\/\/greenfilmshooting.net\/blog\/de\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/Workshop.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-7347\" src=\"http:\/\/greenfilmshooting.net\/blog\/de\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/Workshop-300x290.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"290\" height=\"280\" \/><\/a>stainable filmmaking was also the subject of a <a href=\"https:\/\/greenfilmshooting.net\/blog\/en\/2018\/11\/02\/green-production-seminar-in-helsinki\/\">Green Film Shooting<\/a> seminar in Helsinki that was supported by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ses.fi\/en\/home-english\/\">Finnish Film Foundation<\/a>. \u201cIt was particularly gratifying that representatives from all sectors of the film industry attended, including set designers, production assistants, line producers, etc.\u201d, says Jaana Puskala, Head of the International Department, Finnish Film Foundation. \u201cThis promises good things to come as we move forward to produce films in a more ecologically friendly manner in Finland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Finland\u2019s first ever green production is slated to be launched by the Helsinki-based production company <a href=\"https:\/\/bufo.fi\/\">Bufo<\/a>, whose credits include the 2014 Oscar entry <em>Concrete Night<\/em> by Pirjo Honkasalo as well as Aki Kaurisma\u0308ki\u2019s Berlinale Silver Bear Winner, <em>The Other Side of Hope<\/em>. Bufo\u2019s upcoming feature film <em>Memory of Water<\/em> will be used as a case study for sustainable filmmaking. In collaboration with Aalto University, Sustainability Coordinator Kaisa Astikainen will research the implementation of sustainable practices in filmmaking, beginning with the pre-production planning phase.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The project unites the disciplines of filmmaking and environmental engineering. \u201cOur aim is to prepare guidelines for sustainable filmmaking, which will be implemented later when the production of<em> Memory of Water<\/em> starts\u201d, Astikainen explains. \u201cThe local conditions, like energy requirements for the cold climate, should be con- sidered when assessing sustainable practices in Finnish conditions.
