Inspired by woodcuts, the short film <em>D\u00e4wit<\/em> is celebrating its world premiere in the Short Film Competition of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.berlinale.de\/en\/im_fokus\/berlinale_themen\/shorts\/shorts.html\">65th Berlin International Film Festival<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201eI always wanted to make an Expressionist movie\u201d, says artist, animator and director David Jansen. \u201eAs far as style is concerned, we decided to produce the woodcut effect in the style of Frans Masereel digitally. <em>D\u00e4wit<\/em> is a classic, epic story of a hero: \u201eWhenever he falls or stumbles, he\u2018s taking a step forward.\u201c It took more than 300 production days to complete this ambitious project, which was born in Fabian&amp;Fred\u2018s studio.<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/94497361?color=a9aaab&amp;title=0&amp;byline=0&amp;portrait=0\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the images for this film were created and animated by using Tablets at a Thinkpad or workstation\u201c, says Producer Fabian Driehorst. \u201eWe had only two workstations. The principal animation was done on a 24-inch Wacom monitor, while the final artwork, pencil tests, and corrections were done on a Wacom Intuos Pro monitor. The manufacturers supported this first green animated film project with Tablets, Thinkpads, and reference displays, which support image quality review, from NEC. \u201eIBM Thinkpads have economical 65-watt power adaptors as well as workstations and servers with at least <a href=\"http:\/\/www.plugloadsolutions.com\/\">80-Plus GOLD<\/a> certified, energy-efficient power adaptors\u201c, explains the founder of Fabian&amp;Fred. The power consumption of the two main computers was 65 watts in continuous operation. The systems were also networked for rendering and back-ups. The production team relied on public transportation, train, carsharing, and bicycle. In addition, they used recycled paper, and they printed out paper two-sided to reduce waste, which was also separated. \u201eSince we produced digitally, we only needed paper and other materials in pre-production for storyboards, templates, and stylistic development.\u201c<br \/>\n\u201eWe didn\u2019t stop there. We investigated the possibilities of offering organic catering with an energy-efficient kitchen.\u201c For this task, Fabian&amp;Fred was partly subsidized by Temma, an organic food market \u201eWe didn\u2018t reinvent the wheel\u201c, sums up the producer, \u201ebut the guidelines helped us produce in the best way possible, and we will continue these best practices from now on, not only in the studio but in the production office, as well.\u201c<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Working in their independent film, art, and digital communication studio, Fabian&amp;Fred created the first sustainably-produced animated film.
