To reduce the carbon footprint of the entire film to a minimum, the production used the Green Toolkit management software which allows carbon emissions to be calculated in advance and reduced accordingly.

Mother Mary is the first international film production that calculated its carbon footprint in accordance with the ISO 14067 standard, which was verified by an independent third-party audit. “Sustainable film production is not mandatory in the US”, says Auri Jackson, Sustainability Manager at the US independent company A24. The company that produced internationally successful films such as Moonlight, the seven-time Oscar winner Everything Everywhere All at Once, as well as the box office hit The Brutalist, developed its own sustainability strategy, which is not limited to single projects.

“As we at A24 are aware of the importance of sustainable practices and our responsibility towards them, we strive to provide all our productions with a Green Premium Vendor Budget to cover any additional costs incurred for sustainable measures.” For Mother Mary, in which Anne Hathaway plays a mega star, the Green Toolkit software was used to systematically assess, reduce, and document the carbon footprint over the entire life cycle of the production. “This standardized tool helps us make data-driven decisions to reduce carbon emissions, align with global best practices, and ensure consistent environmental reporting”, explains Auri Jackson.

On the German side, Augenschein Filmproduktion is involved in Mother Mary, which has been supported by the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW with one million euros. “The ISO 1406 certified solution enabled us to harmonize the sustainability requirements set in the US with the ecological production standards in Germany,” emphasizes Roman Russo, who was responsible for the practical implementation of sustainable solutions with his service agency Green Toolkit. One of the challenges was to avoid the use of diesel generators when filming in the countryside. “Instead, we used the Butler M 150/150 battery storage system.”

Much of the shooting took place at MMC studios in Cologne. To avoid using shuttle buses, the crew members were given city scooters. When looking for a location for the concert scene with 2,000 extras, the production opted for the nearby Oberhausen stadium. To give this location the desired look, location manager Ruggero de Virgiliis recorded various concert halls and transmitted them via video stream to the production office. A small crew shot the preferred concert hall in Berlin so that 3D scans could be inserted as backgrounds during digital compositing in post-production.

The detailed calculations with their corresponding projections for practical planning paid off. „In this production, we were able to save about 25 percent of our carbon emissions through our Green Premium Vendor Budget and the advice of the Green Toolkit“, concludes Auri Jackson.

Photos: © Michael Yada/A.M.P.A.S., Lisa Plesser, Tool Box AdobeStock

Image montage: © Markus Schäfer

Academy Award-winning Hollywood actress Anne Hathaway stars in the American comedy Mother Mary by David Lowery, which was shot in Cologne and the surrounding area for about fifty shooting days.
