On the first Sunday of every month, events are held nationwide where people can get advice on how to switch from the Windows operating system to Linux, for example, or how to use Signal instead of the WhatsApp messenger service.

“With the monopoly position of their companies, people like Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Mark Zuckerberg determine worldwide how we obtain information online, how we discuss, communicate, or act,” criticizes author Marc-Uwe Kling, who co-developed the idea for DI.DAY. “No person or company should have such uncontrolled influence, because then we can no longer live in freedom.”

The initiative is supported by a broad alliance of organizations, including Digitalcourage, Ecosia, Independent Federated Trust & Safety (IFTAS), Mastodon, Robin Wood, Wechange, and Wikimedia Germany. “It’s fantastic that so many organizations are actively participating in DI.DAY,” explains Björn Staschen, who coordinates DI.DAY with the Save Social initiative.

“The big platforms deliberately make it difficult to switch,” emphasizes Linus Neumann, Spokesperson for the Chaos Computer Club. "At the same time, the network effect works against us: Will we lose our contacts when we move? Will we be able to find our sources of information again? And how can we even make the switch? We are therefore all the more pleased that CCC experts are on hand in many cities to provide advice and assistance. This not only makes the move successful, but also sustainable."

At International Sustainability Day 2026, organized by Green Film Shooting and Greenigma on February 14, 2026 during the Berlinale, Linus Neumann gave an insight into how social media analyzes our relationships and interests in order to use these findings as profitably as possible for advertising marketing or political influence. Artificial intelligence further reinforces this trend, as ever-increasing amounts of data can be evaluated, used automatically, and exploited economically.

This network effect can be counteracted if many users switch digital services, thereby protecting their independence, personal data, resilience, and democracy. The DI.DAY website offers tips for switching. Instructions provide specific information about privacy-friendly email providers, independent messengers such as Signal, and browsers such as Firefox. Meanwhile, more and more switch cafés and local hubs are being set up. At the DI.DAY on March 1, more than 500 events are taking place across Germany.

Illustration: © Florian Biege for the DI.DAY, Video: Die Grüne Filmagentur

With Digital Independence Day , or “DI.DAY,” the Chaos Computer Club has launched a digital day of action.
