In addition, the operating time can be extended by parallel recharging during operation. In most cases, a standard Schuko connection is sufficient to supply two 5 kW LED spotlights with power for an entire day of shooting.

The mobile battery storage unit, including off-road wheels, weighs 361 kg. Thanks to its wheels, push bars, and certified suspension points for helicopter transport, this mobile energy source can be used anywhere. Several productions have already benefited from the MonkeyPack by using it to power their lighting. Moreover, Kemama envisions daisy chaining PowerPekkis 30/10. “They can be coupled on the AC side, but not yet on the DC side”, explains developer Conrad Keuck.

In order to insure the safety of personnel at connection points, additional requirements must now be met in the design of battery storage systems. The reason for this is LED technology, which integrates power-supply switching. “These capacitive consumers not only produce sinusoidal fault currents, but also clocked and smooth direct currents”, explains Keuck. “Since the type A spring current switch cannot detect these, we now install type B with a small power supply as well as electronics that can measure these direct current faults.”

Several optimizations have been made to upgrade its latest model of the Filmhybrid 30/60 mobile power supply. “We chose a low-emission E-Crafter as the chassis”, reports Judith Mann, Managing Director of Kemama. The 115 kWh battery capacity and 60 kW output power remain unchanged. The biggest difference is that the new FH 30/60 does not have a range extender, but it is possible to recharge the Filmhybrid 30/60 during operation by using any power source.

“A major advantage is that the battery is now fast-charging and can be recharged in a short time with 100 kW”, says Keuck. “At a charge level of ten percent, the battery can be recharged quickly to eighty percent in one hour, so it’s ready to use again.”

Photos: © Maike Maier, Kemama

Fast charging, operational reliability, continuous high levels of output, and battery capacity under cold conditions are the key requirements that a mobile power storage system for film production should meet.
