Cinegreen provides clean energy on set

A new generation of mobile battery storage units that can be charged on the grid or at a car charging station has been developed by Cinegreen. The Zurich-based company, founded by DoP Maher Maleh and the producers Wiebke & Claus Feit in 2022, also has a German subsidiary, which includes an R&D department in Berlin. The mobile energy storage system NXTGEN 100/300 has been designed for the requirements of larger film productions. The power storage has a battery capacity of 300 kWh and can provide a peak load of more than 100 kW.

“That’s possible because of the system’s technical infrastructure”, explains engineer Dr. Krzystof Drabik. “Thanks to the power distribution to the cells, the unit can even cope with surges 150 percent above capacity.” All the Cinegreen mobile power storage units, ranging from 2 to 2,200 kWh, have the advantage of preventing an unbalanced load of three-phase output from occurring. Each phase of the three-phase output can be used independently because the control system regulates their equal distribution.

The system can be easy operated by just switching it on and off. It emits no exhaust fumes or noise, and it requires neither grounding nor maintenance. The lithium battery is designed for 5,000 charge cycles. Then the batteries will be recycled when 80 percent of their service life has been reached.

Thanks to distribution partners in Great Britain, Ireland, France, Spain, Monaco, Belgium, and Morocco, Cinegreen’s mobile power storage units are in use internationally. The manufacturer donated several generators that have been providing safe power supplies to the Ukraine since mid-2022. “We are in direct contact with Kiev to support their infrastructure’s power supply”, says Maher Maleh.

In Germany 2,200 kWh units serve as the power supply of OB vans, for example, at large Bundesliga matches that supplemented power drawn from the stadium. The same set up is envisioned for Champions League matches in Great Britain.
