Filmmakers and industry professionals from around the world can submit their applications for the Sustainability Management course that takes places at the International Screen Institute in Vienna from October 14 to 18, 2024. The International Screen Institute provides high-quality training programs for European and international film, TV and media professionals. The Sustainability Management course is tailored to cultivate circularity and holistic sustainability in the audiovisual sector, encompassing film, TV, commercials, and moving image production and distribution. It empowers participants with tools to manage their projects, institutions, productions or businesses sustainably.
“Our comprehensive course, designed to elevate how to engage in your practice, business, production, film fund while emphasizing sustainability”, says Course Director Djamila Grandits.“Going beyond the traditional focus on ecological aspects in film and TV production, our multidimensional approach encompasses economic, cultural, and social perspectives, fostering a holistic understanding of industry dynamics.”
The five-day program covers sustainability in all film-related areas – from production and scriptwriting to distribution and impact. “We recognize the importance of audiences, on-screen narrative, and behind-the-screen impact, shaping a future where the industry acknowledges its environmental footprint and social responsibilities whilst valuing both the narrative and the individuals contributing to it”, emphasizes Course Director Zsofia Szemeredy. “Our aim is to forge a future where the film and media landscape operates sustainably, embodying environmental responsibility and respecting the individuals shaping its narrative.”
The field of social sustainability covers topics such as leadership and management, collaboration, workplace design and accessibility, as well as diversity, equity and inclusion. Experts from various contexts and trades will share strategies, fields of action and tools. They will show how sustainable working methods in the film industry can be initiated, strengthened and secured in the sense of a holistic understanding of dynamics and changes.
Sustainable Practices, eco-friendly and ethical, are also prioritized throughout the International Screen Institute’s operations and courses. The offices and workshop-venues are located in the Impact Hub Vienna which is certified with the Austrian eco-label UZ62 for sustainable businesses. All courses are held in English and take place in Vienna. “Sustainability, qualilty, collaboration, inclusion, and innovation are the five core values of the International Screen Institute”, underlines Djamila Grandits. “We actively encourage individuals from underrepresented groups and communities to apply.”

‘I never have been told precisely what the rules are for shooting a green movie, but we are trying to do it. This is something new for me. Sometimes people overlight scenes at night. I don’t. If I can see with my own eyes, then it is enough for the film. In that sense I am a green DoP.’
Academy Award winner Jeremy Irons who stars in the Berlinale Competition entry The Night Train To Lisbon is a fan of source segregated recycling. „Especially in Germany you have done a lot for that. You are examplary in the matter of waste separation.“
The Hollywood actor travelled around the world to promote the environmntal documentary feature film Trashed by Candida Brady which deals with the global garbage problem: „We buy it, we bury it, we burn it and then we ignore it“, says Brady. „With Jeremy Irons as our guide, we discover what happens to the billion or so tons of waste that goes unaccounted for each year.“
Since the world premiere at the International Cannes Film Festival in 2012 Trashed picked up various nominations and awards at international festivals.
