Traffic is the problem child of climate protection. The upcoming Euro 7 standards will reduce emissions of nitrous oxide, fine particles, carbon monoxide, and ammonia, all of which are pollutants. Climate-friendly mobility also requires sustainably-produced fuels for existing vehicles. For this reason, Oliver Graff set up an HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil), filling station on the site of his Cologne-based equipment rental house CamCar.
The 5,000 liter tank supplies CamCar’s entire fleet of vehicles with synthetic diesel. With HVO 100 produced by hydrating used cooking oil and plant-based raw materials, vehicles run more quietly, nearly odorless, and with carbon emissions reduced by as much as ninety percent.
“This alternative fuel costs only a few cents more, but it produces tremendously less pol- lutant emissions and fine particles”, emphasizes Oliver Graff. “We have to replace the fine particle filter in the generators once every 200 hours. When you burn fossil diesel, you have to replace the fine particle filter, which costs 200 euros, after only fifty hours.” He was inspired to make the switch by the Jola-Rent rental house in Cologne, which fuels its film vehicles with C.A.R.E Diesel.
According to the European EN 15940 standard, HVO 100 can be used for all conventional die- sel engines. The Dreamtool production started fueling its vehicles at CamCar‘s company site when it shot the feature film Die Beste zum Schluss (WT). For 24/7 access and refuelling, production drivers receive a chip card, so that CamCar can digitally monitor the exact amount of fuel used.
One advantage of HVO 100 is that diesel vehicles don’t have to be retrofitted. “Electric cars and hybrid vehicles are already arriving with an ecological backpack in their life cycle assessment because of resource-intense man- ufacturing related to battery-based automotive technology”, emphasizes Joachim Damasky, vehicle specialist at VDI, the German Association of Engineers. “We have to take a look at the carbon emissions over the course of production, product life, and disposal in making a life cycle assessment. Only an envi- ronmentally friendly-produced battery and its pimary materials can make electric mobility climate-friendly.“
For this reason, Moritz Kromer, Managing Director of Mobilespace, has applied the principle of sustainability to his fleet of 180 vehicles. „We have been reparing our vehicles in-house for years because it is more eco- nomical and reduces resource consumption.“ Furthermore, the actor’s trailers and makeup trailers are being equipped with solar panels and a storage battery to provide elecrical energy and light. Floor heating is also powered by electrical energy. „We’re also installing sta- tionary heating, which is powered by diesel,“ says Moritz Kromer. „It‘s more efficient than running a diesel generator to produce electric energy for a blower-fan heater.“
While classic trailers have only three-phase cur- rent for energy-consumption loads, the retrofit- ted photovoltaic-equipped trailers also provide an energy supply through a Schuko plug for a coffee machine, laptop, smart phone, a split air conditioner, and other small loads. „With bat- tery-stored solar power on board, our vehicles remain energy self-sufficient for several hours“, notes Moritz Kromer. “While working a three- hour off-grid shoot, no generator is needed.” If there’s a surge in power demand in the trailer, the solar power kicks in as a booster. “Therefore, a smaller generator with 40 kW, instead of 60 kW, can be used, so fuel output is reduced.“

The Hollywood actor travelled around the world to promote the environmntal documentary feature film Trashed by Candida Brady which deals with the global garbage problem: „We buy it, we bury it, we burn it and then we ignore it“, says Brady. „With Jeremy Irons as our guide, we discover what happens to the billion or so tons of waste that goes unaccounted for each year.“
Since the world premiere at the International Cannes Film Festival in 2012 Trashed picked up various nominations and awards at international festivals.
