Wanted: innovations for Eisvogel competition

The Eisvogel – Prize for Sustainable Film Production competition is open until November 15, 2024. For the fourth time, the Federal Ministry for the Environment (BMUV), the Federal Government’s Commissioner for Culture and Media (BKM), and the Heinz Sielmann Foundation will award a prize money of 20,000 euros to a production, which used an innovative practice that has substantially reduced its environmental impact.

The innovation can be technical or related to the organisation of the production. In any case, the innovation has to exceed the requirements that are defined in the ecological standards for film and TV production in Germany. It is essential that the implemented innovations can be transferred to other productions. For the first time, the applicants need to visually show the innovation that they submit for the Eisvogel competition.

Besides the description of technical or organisational measures, the innovation has to be outlined in a short film clip with a maximum length of 1’30". The film clip should show how the innovation was applied in the production and its beneficial outcome. The applicants can choose any kind of format for the film as, for example, an animation style.

The productions that are eligible for the Eisvogel competition include feature films, documentaries, series and animated movies of any kind of genre, which can be produced for any kind of distribution channel such as theatrical release, TV, video or streaming. Advertising and promotional films as well as entertainment programs such as talk, game, or quiz shows are excluded from the competition. It is required that the productions are completed between September 2023 and November 2024.

The competition regulations are available at the website.  The submissions will be reviewed in a two-stage process. The award ceremony will take place on the opening day of the Berlin International Film Festival, February 13, 2025, at the Federal Ministry for the Environment in Berlin.
