From June 27 to 29, 2024, the international film tech event Euro Cine Expo will take place for the third time in Munich. Before the Munich Filmfest is going to kick off, much more than a hundred exhibitors will present their technical equipment in the Bavarian metropolis. Energy-efficient lights, cameras, lenses and camera grip solutions will be shown as well as eco-friendly generators, hybrid and battery models.
Innovative solutions for green film production is the topic of a panel discussion, that Green Film Shooting will present at the Euro Cine Expo in Munich. Thanks to an increasing demand for eco-friendly energy sources on film set, a huge bandwidth of different solutions are available on the market.
In 2019, the German company Polyma launched a mobile power bank with an output up to 100 kW, that is running smoothly even at a one-hundred percent unbalanced load. The uneven charging of the three-phase network is no longer a challenge. Compared to a similar diesel generator operating at a lower load, the mobile power bank saves about fifty to seventy percent on running energy costs. The unit recharges with a bidirectional cable connected to a CEE125 A outlet.
The Cologne-based rental house Maier Bros. offers several energy-saving and efficient generators like the Filmhybrid 100 and the Filmhybrid 130, that produce less soot in continous operation than a classic diesel machine, as Till Casper Juon, Sustainability Expert at Maier Bros., will explain. The Filmhybrid 30/60 is developed by Kemama, a spin-off that the late Maier Bros. CEO Niels Maier founded in collaboration with the developer Conrad Keuck und Judith Mann.
The German company SFC Energy is developing and producing fuel cell based gensets powered by green hydrogen for an environmentally friendly mobile energy supply for film sets, construction sites, and events. After the mobile H2Genset with a continuous output of 10 kW has already proven itself, Michael Weis, Business Development Manager Hydrogen at SFC Energy, will give an outlook on a 50 kW genset, which is designed for larger power demands.
The international operating companies Cinegreen and Skoon Energy provide energy storage solutions. While diesel generators were developed for operation on construction sites, where three phase is required, it doesn’t matter how much electrical energy E-generators consume on each phase, because the system automatically balances itself. Maher Maleh, DoP and CEO of Cinegreen Germany, will speak about the use and experience with mobile battries. The Dutch company Skoon Energy provides clean energy solutions on set of international productions, as the company founder and CEO Peter Paul Van Voorst will highlight.
The Green Consultant Roman Russo, who tries to cut carbon emissions by planning in an early stage, already worked with various advanced generators and mobile batteries. In order to reach this goal in the different departments of the production, he developed the online tool Green Toolkit, whose functionalities he is going to showcase.

‘I never have been told precisely what the rules are for shooting a green movie, but we are trying to do it. This is something new for me. Sometimes people overlight scenes at night. I don’t. If I can see with my own eyes, then it is enough for the film. In that sense I am a green DoP.’
Academy Award winner Jeremy Irons who stars in the Berlinale Competition entry The Night Train To Lisbon is a fan of source segregated recycling. „Especially in Germany you have done a lot for that. You are examplary in the matter of waste separation.“
The Hollywood actor travelled around the world to promote the environmntal documentary feature film Trashed by Candida Brady which deals with the global garbage problem: „We buy it, we bury it, we burn it and then we ignore it“, says Brady. „With Jeremy Irons as our guide, we discover what happens to the billion or so tons of waste that goes unaccounted for each year.“
