The first environmental legislative handbook

The Hollywood star, politician, and environmentalist Arnold Schwarzenegger launched a database of legislation to help combat climate change. Created by the Schwarzenegger Institute at the University of Southern California in partnership with the National Caucus of Environmental Legislators the website envirolaws.org  presents a searchable database of environmental bills and laws.on topics such as Air Quality, Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy, Human Health and Climate Change. Compiled as an Digital Environmental Legislative Handbook, this list has been set up in response to President Trump’s decision to leave the Paris accord.

“We hope to assist legislators who are interested in advancing smart environmental policies by sharing best practices and actual legislation that is working successfully in a number of states already”, says Arnold Schwarzenegger. His new website will empower state legislators to go further than the Trump administration is willing to go on environmental issues. “We believe that lawmakers from both political parties and all 50 states will be able to use this resource to find creative legislative solutions to many of the environmental and public health issues facing the people and communities they represent.”

The former California Governor is already addressing climate change since many years. Thanks to his efforts, California made a commitment to cut back greenhouse gases by 25 % by the year 2020, and about an additional 85 % by 2050. “Going green creates a tremendous amount of jobs”, said Schwarzenegger in an interview with Green Film Shooting at this year’s Cannes film festival. “In California, the green sector creates ten times more jobs than any other sector. 66 percent of all the venture capital goes to green energy and renewables. It comes to California from the whole United States because we passed laws and we created an environment in that they can invest. Tesla has built the most successful car that beats every car from Detroit. We are number one in green tech.”

The politician also created the nonprofit environmental organization R20 that helps sub-national governments around the world to develop low-carbon and climate resilient economic development projects. As a strong supporter of the Paris climate agreement, Schwarzenegger met with French President Emmanuel Macron to discuss environmental issues and a green future. “We all have to protect the world and make it a better place that we give to the next generation. It is our responsibility”, concludes the Hollywood star.
