For the first time, green production and financing will be an issue at the European Film Market (EFM) in Berlin. During 2018 Berlinale, the European Film Market will be holding the EFM Producers Hub in collaboration with ACE Producers and the Berlinale Co-Production Market. On February 18 , the EFM Producers Hub will focus on Strategies for Green Production and Financing. Sustainability experts from Europe and the U.S. present their strategies for producing films in a more environmentally-friendly manner and the resulting savings on production costs.
In Europe, it’s often the line producer who is in charge of implementing sustainable production practices. It’s the line producer’s responsibility to harmonize the specific measures that may be taken with the capabilities of crew members in various departments. Meanwhile, in the U.S. big studio films as well as independent productions are hiring an eco supervisor to take charge of greening a production from the planning stages to the execution of green tasks.
This talk focuses on the requirements, problems, and practical solutions of environmentally-friendly film production as well as on the benefits it yields. Furthermore, government policy reforms involving stricter environmental regulations in various industries (i.e., the ban of diesel generators and automobiles) are also affecting film and TV productions. Film producers, rental houses, and manufacturers will have to deal with these issues if they want to remain competitive.
Last but not least, the requirement for green production can be an incentive — or even a condition — to obtaining financing. In Europe, where most of the films are co-financed by regional and national film funds, different financing models already exist that link sustainable production activities to levels of financial support.
Speakers include Tim Wagendorp, Sustainability Coordinator at Flanders Audiovisual Fund in Brussels, and Emellie O’Brien, Eco-Supervisor (The Post, Queen of Katwe, Noah, The Amazing Spider-Man 2) of New York-based Earth Angle. The event will be moderated by Birgit Heidsiek, Publisher of Green Film Shooting. The EFM Producers Hub is located at Martin-Gropius-Bau, 2nd floor. The event will take place on Sunday, February 18 from 4.30-5.30 pm.
