The Travels of Tár

Shooting in a mixed reality studio can save time and resources, and reduce costs as well ascarbon emissions. Todd Field used the LED-Cave’s mixed reality studio in Berlin for Tár. The US production Tár, featuring Academy Award-winning actress Cate Blanchett and Nina Hoss in the leading roles, was filmed largely in Berlin, where most of the story takes place.
The interior shots took place at the Jofa Atelier.

Some scenes were shot in a mixed reality studio in Berlin. Forty meters in width and 6.5 meters in height, the LED-Cave, located in the Paradiesstraße, offers not only an inexhaustible creative space but also numerous production options. “From the classic single camera film production to multi-camera productions, we can deal with almost any technical requirement, including tracking”, emphasizes Thilo Strack, Managing Director of Rent Event Tec, which operates the LED-Cave in partnership with Lichthaus-Gruppe and Moo Video Productions.

Film, advertising, and entertainment productions can be brought to life on this 22-meter diameter stage with much less logistical effort and often in half the time. Twelve media servers create virtual backgrounds on the LED wall, which permits the actors to move with a tracking camera and dive into different worlds. This pays off economically as well as ecologically if — as in the case of Tár — the time, cost, and carbon-heavy travel for the cast and crew can be avoided.
