Green training at TorinoFilmLab

The TorinoFilmLab, the international laboratory for the development of films and TV series in Turin, also offers workshops on sustainability. With TFL Next – Green Narratives it launched an online workshop designed to support screenwriters and directors in crafting stories that raise awareness and inspire change. The program not only explores the narrative potential of climate storytelling, but also trains a new generation of story editors capable of guiding writers through these themes while preserving their unique creative voices.

The French script consultant Lucie Trémolières hold the masterclass "Writing stories for cinema in a time of climate change" that addressed how we reflect the reality of the climate crisis in the films that we make – not only by producing films more sustainably but also in terms of the narrative. She pointed out that stories and elements of stories can support our transition to a regenerative future and inspire script writers to alternative storytelling approaches.

Moreover, TFL launched the Green Production Lab. This hands-on training program is designed to connect sustainability professionals with a scientific background such as biology, engineering, or economics with film and TV production. The hybrid training equips participants with the knowledge and tools to collaborate effectively with producers and integrate sustainability practices across all stages of a film project from development to post-production. By applying advanced scientific expertise to the audiovisual sector, the program aims to enhance the financial and organizational efficiency of sustainable practices on set.

During a five-day program of masterclasses, group work and individual sessions, sustainability professionals first receive a practical introduction to film production including crew roles, budgeting, script reading, and on-set dynamics. Guided by TorinoFilmLab tutors, they develop together with producers and production assistants tailored sustainability strategies, which are based on real film projects. Throughout the process, participants explore key topics such as environmental impact, sustainable post-production, European funding opportunities, and tools like certifications and carbon calculators, culminating in the preparation of a final and concrete sustainability plan.

The Green Production Lab workshops take place in different European regions. The first edition in El Prat de Llobregat/ Spain brought together eighteen participants, including twelve sustainability professionals and three production teams with feature film projects nearing the production stage. To ensure a strong impact, Green Production Lab also works closely with regional partners to attract professionals from each host country’s audiovisual sector.

“It was a real pleasure to support the Green Production Lab through Catalan Institute for Cultural Companies (ICEC)”, says Laia Boixader, Technical Manager at the Catalunya Film Commission. “The workshop provided a valuable space for reflection, learning, and exchange, bringing together committed professionals from diverse fields and countries, all eager to contribute their skills toward a more sustainable film industry.”
