Management of resources, protection of the environment, and climate change are increasingly important issues for the film industry. The use of renewables and the efficient use of energy offer opportunities to cut costs. In recent years, the film industry has seen digitization lead to a tremendous increase in energy costs. More efficient use of power, heat, and air conditioning can radically cut energy costs.

The Green Cinema Handbook focuses on the areas of Energy Efficiency, Renewables, Concession and Waste Management. Its approach presents:

  • Measures that can be taken by cinemas;

  • Measures that exhibitors already have to take or may soon have to take because of new regulations and guidelines that are coming into effect;

  • and Measures that exhibitors are already taking which are presented as examples of best practice.

The Green Cinema Handbook provides an overview of practical solutions to meet existing requirements. One purpose of The Green Cinema Handbook is to encourage exhibitors to exchange their experiences in actions they have taken in the fields of energy efficiency, renewables, concession and waste management. Successful solutions and tried-and-true approaches for a more sustainable operation of cinemas are presented in over fifty best practice examples.
Regardless of whether energy is used efficiently, either renewables generate energy or alternative products are offered at the concession stand — the unwavering premise is that ecology doesn’t work without economy.
