On the occasion of the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival, Ecoprod and Green Film Shooting hosted the roundtable discussion All about green training which gave an insight into different training approaches all across Europe. Since more than a decade, the French association Ecoprod offers training, tools, and green production guides. „This year, we are launching a new five day-training with the three key topics: the impact of a production, the strategy to reduce the impact and carbon calculation“, says Alissa Aubenque, Ecoprod‘s Director of Operation.
In Italy, environment has been admitted to the constitution. „We are very proud of that“, emphasizes Nevina Satta, CEO of the Sardegna Film Commission, which provides training for green film productions which a focus on below-the line since 2014. „Now, we are involving more the content producers and pushing them to cooperate with scientists.“ Italian producer Giovanni Pompeli, winner of the Golden Bear at the 2022 Berlinale with his production Alcarràs by Carla Simon, is launching in collaboration with the TorinoFilmLab a Green Lab training programme in various European regions. „Changing the habits is the most difficult part“, says the producer. „The most important is to have a hands-on approach how to think about a sustainability plan.“
In Poland, production is becoming more sustainable thanks to the Film for Climate group, which developed green guidelines. „We are planning a series of training on green production“, says Alejandra Leszczyńska, founder of Warsaw-based Lapolaca Productions . In South Africa, the Greenset project gained momentum when the service company Film Africa adopted sustainability on all its productions in 2019. Founded as a start up non profit organisation, now Greenset is a subset of the South African Film Academy. „We focus on job creation and service training in the sustainability in film sector while working with producers to minimize the carbon footprint of productions filming in South Africa“, says Greenset founder Cindy Mkwanazi.
Meanwhile Hungary serves as a big service hub for U.S. studios. „Most of the time, they have us on board in the pre-production phase“, says Julia Tordai, co-founder of Green Eyes Production. „If the big studios are not willing to pay for the green premium, the supply chain won‘t change.“ French eco manager Anais Mounereau stresses that it is difficult to structure a global sustainability strategy on set. „At Secoya, we offer the productions a software tool that helps to estimate and reduce their carbon footprint.“
In the South German city Freiburg, eco consultant Jakob Reinhart provided a recent production with electric cargo bikes. The cameraman even used the trailer for a dolly shot. „You need crew members who are willing to try something new“, concludes Jakob Reinhart. „They need to have the energy and time to create an innovative solution. It won‘t save the world if we only calculate our footprint. I better invest the time to actually reduce carbon emissions.“

‘I never have been told precisely what the rules are for shooting a green movie, but we are trying to do it. This is something new for me. Sometimes people overlight scenes at night. I don’t. If I can see with my own eyes, then it is enough for the film. In that sense I am a green DoP.’
Academy Award winner Jeremy Irons who stars in the Berlinale Competition entry The Night Train To Lisbon is a fan of source segregated recycling. „Especially in Germany you have done a lot for that. You are examplary in the matter of waste separation.“
The Hollywood actor travelled around the world to promote the environmntal documentary feature film Trashed by Candida Brady which deals with the global garbage problem: „We buy it, we bury it, we burn it and then we ignore it“, says Brady. „With Jeremy Irons as our guide, we discover what happens to the billion or so tons of waste that goes unaccounted for each year.“
Since the world premiere at the International Cannes Film Festival in 2012 Trashed picked up various nominations and awards at international festivals.
