Blow up on set

The atmospheric lighting used in film shoots has a dark side. In order to illuminate the subject perfectly, the crew often has to lug spotlights weighing several kilograms. A lighter solution is inflatable LED lights, which gaffer Eduard Bochanov and engineer Evgenii Vetlugin developed with their Hamburg-based company Pipe Lighting.

“Our dream was to replace the lighting truck with a Smart car containing two tripods and two bags of lighting equipment”, says Pipe Lighting CEO Eduard Bochanov. “A small, compact package is all you need to produce soft, bright light with excellent light quality, authenticity, and a perfect color rendering index.” The Hamburg-based startup Pipe Lighting offers inflatable light sources in various sizes, ranging from the 800 g lightweight Pipe Go to ColorPipes in different formats. All these lights can be battery- or household-power-outlet operated. The maximum power consumption of the largest light is 1,600 watts.

“Our inflatable lights offer advantages for everyone”, emphasizes Bochanov. “The producer saves money, the gaffer doesn’t throw his back out, the DOP gets brilliant light, and no generator pollutes the environment.” The bright, compact soft lights are perfect top-fill lights for atmospheric indoor scenes.

The premier class is a helium-filled surface light with RGBWW LEDs that can be controlled by a pixel controller. “Programming color gradients makes it possible to simulate effects such as floating clouds, fire, thunderstorms, or emergency lighting”, explains the gaffer. By providing soft overhead lighting from a single source, the floating ColorPipeCloud 99 softlight replaces several conventional lights. This award-winning solution was used during the shooting of the second season of the Dutch royal series Máxima in the historic Nieuwe Kerk church in Amsterdam. “By using two 4.5 x 4.5 m x 1.20 m mattresses and a bicolor light, we lit the entire set, which had more than forty actors and 200 extras.”

Thanks to their IP 67 certification, the lights may also be used outdoors in the pouring
rain. The cover for the lamp head consists of a translucent TPU film, which is white on one
side and black on the other. “We source half of the components, such as films, valves, clamps, cables, aluminum tubes, and housings for the dimmers, from Europe”, reports Bochanov. The entire production, as well as the repairs, is done in the Hamburg workshop.

All usable parts from defective devices are reused. If a 4×8 foot light has a crack in its casing, the film covering is reused for a smaller light. “We use refurbished devices for rental or we donate them to film students or Global South countries." Meanwhile, Pipe Lighting’s lights are available in over forty countries around the world. “Thanks to the light weight and packing size of the lights, their corresponding carbon footprint from transportation is low.”
